How to Print Coloring Pages at Home (the Right Way)

2 min read

Printing a coloring page sounds trivial — hit print and go. But a few small choices make the difference between a crisp, satisfying outline and a faint, cut-off, ink-hungry mess. Here's how to get a clean printout every time.

Choose the right paper

For everyday crayon and colored-pencil work, standard 20–24 lb printer paper is perfectly fine and cheap enough to print freely. If you plan to use markers, step up to a heavier 28–32 lb stock or cardstock so colors don't bleed through. For watercolor or gel pens, a thicker mixed-media paper holds up best.

Get your printer settings right

Most "bad" printouts come down to three settings:

  • Fit to page / scale. Set scaling to "Fit" so the whole design lands on the page with even margins instead of getting cropped at the edges.
  • Print in grayscale. Coloring pages are black-and-white line art, so choose black ink only (grayscale). This saves your color cartridges entirely.
  • Quality. "Normal" is fine for clean lines and is faster and cheaper than "Best." Bump it up only if lines look faint.

A quick print preview catches cropping and scaling problems before you waste a sheet.

Why our pages download as PDFs

Every page on ColorDaily downloads as a print-ready PDF, not a raw image — and that's deliberate. A PDF locks the layout to a clean, full-size page with proper margins, so it prints consistently across different printers without the resizing headaches you get when printing a JPG straight from a browser. Just open the PDF and print at 100% / "Fit."

Troubleshooting common issues

  • Lines look faint? Raise print quality, or check that your printer isn't low on black ink or in a draft/eco mode.
  • Image is cut off? Switch scaling to "Fit to page" and confirm the paper size matches (Letter or A4).
  • Page prints tiny or off-center? Turn off "borderless," and print at 100% scale.

Beyond paper

Once it's printed, you're set for crayons, pencils, or markers. Prefer to color on a tablet? Many apps let you import the image and color digitally — handy for travel or mess-free coloring.
